The introduction begins with the idea that the deep ocean was once one of Earth’s greatest unknown frontiers. Long before space exploration captured public imagination, scientists sought to explore the mysterious world beneath the sea, where darkness, immense pressure, and unfamiliar life forms challenged existing ideas about nature.

Brad Fox introduces the bathysphere expeditions of the early 1930s, during which naturalist William Beebe descended in a small steel sphere connected to the surface by a cable while marine biologist Gloria Hollister recorded his spoken observations. These dives provided some of the first direct human observations of the deep ocean and revealed extraordinary bioluminescent creatures and unfamiliar underwater landscapes.
